When Marlene and Bernie participated in a four-week course at the Process Work Institute in Portland, Oregon in 2015, we discovered many parallels with with our own work as spiritual directors.  In this three-part series of conversations, Ingrid will share with us her knowledge of process work and how it might be integrated into the practice of spiritual direction.

Session One: What is Process?

Processwork originally grew from Jungian psychology in the 1970s and 80s, when Arnold Mindell practiced at the Jung Institute in Zurich.  Dr. Mindell’s deep curiosity and work with people on body symptoms led him to broaden the dreamwork approach and explore different sensory channels.  Processwork was born as one of the first psychologies to integrate somatic experiences, and has since grown far beyond psychology in its scope.

Processwork understands human experience as a dreaming process which unfolds through sensory channels.  Our experiences are alive in Consensus (everyday) Reality as well as Dreamland – aspects of experience which are subjective and not necessarily agreed upon in a given culture.  At the deepest level, consciousness and reality spring from Essence, birthed and mediated by Process Mind, which is analogous to the ancient Chinese understanding of the Tao Which Cannot Be Said.  In this session Ingrid will introduce:

Process Mind and the 3 levels of awareness.
Parallel worlds and worm-holing
Skill Building – demonstrations and exercises

Session Two:   Dreaming

Dreaming is a coherent and meaningful flow of experiences that underlie all of life’s events. Dreaming happens all the time. We can tap into it and learn to follow and access its wisdom.
The “dreaming process,” as we understand it, includes:

Fantasy and imagination
Accidents
Symptoms, illnesses and death
Synchronicities and world events
Relationship difficulties
Addictions and addictive tendencies
Sleeping dreams
Flirts and movement tendencies
Skill Building – demonstrations and exercises

(class 3) Quantum consciousness

The nature of consciousness remains deeply mysterious and profoundly important, with existential, medical and spiritual implication. We know what it is like to be conscious – to have awareness, a conscious ‘mind’, but who, or what, are ‘we’ who know such things? How is the subjective nature of phenomenal experience – our ‘inner life’ – to be explained in scientific terms? What consciousness actually is, and how it comes about remain unknown. In this session Ingrid will introduce:

Quantum awareness
Quantum wave functions: observed systems and the observer.
The Bell test; holographic theory; interconnectedness.
The Pilot Wave
Life Myth and the path of our true selves
Community, Nature and Cosmos – the stream of dreaming
Skill Building – demonstrations and exercises

About Ingrid:

Ingrid’s guiding inspiration for her life work stems from her history of growing up in South Africa, where as a child, perceiving the injustice around her, she decided early on to devote herself to individual and social change. In service of this vision, Ingrid has achieved two doctoral degrees, has become an Australian licensed psychologist, a certified Process Worker, and a faculty member at the Process Work Institute in Portland, Oregon.

Ingrid has spent 40 years of her life exploring various modalities that enhance human potential and growth, all of which contribute to her eclectic style and method in working with others. She has had extensive experience teaching groups all over the world in addition to being an associate professor at Portland State University, and the National College of Natural Medicine. Ingrid has also devoted herself to the practice of yoga and Buddhist meditation and has followed this spiritual path for many years.

Bernie and Marlene are delighted to meet up with Ingrid again after first meeting her at PWI, Portland, Oregon.   Ingrid will share with us all some aspects of her experience and wisdom which illuminate common threads in the practice of companioning regardless of traditions. Ingrid’s website address is http://ingridrose.net
