Individual Supervision
Marlene and Bernie are formed spiritual directors and supervisors in the Ignatian tradition. They supervise spiritual directors, leaders, pastoral carers, and others in their ministry.
Supervision for people in ministry and spiritual directors is a vital practice of accountability, reflection, and ongoing formation. It provides a safe and structured space where ministers and directors can explore the dynamics of their work, attend to the movements of the Spirit, and discern the impact of their presence on those they accompany. Through supervision, practitioners are invited to deepen self-awareness, recognise blind spots, and integrate theological, pastoral, and psychological insights into their ministry. It is not merely about problem-solving but about cultivating resilience, ethical integrity, and contemplative attentiveness, ensuring that the work of accompaniment remains grounded, life-giving, and responsive to the needs of both individuals and communities.
Supervision is about becoming aware of areas of unfreedom, that is, personal blocks which might prevent a person from ministering effectively. Supervision is also about addressing these areas in ways which promote freedom.Discernment plays a large part in a person’s movement towards free and life-giving choices. This short Youtube clip prepared by Spiritual Directors International gives an excellent overview of what to expect in supervision. Supervision by Maureen Conroy and Lucy Abbott Tucker
